Are Chemical Peels Right for You?

Ildikó Juhasz • March 8, 2021

Chemical peels have significantly increased in popularity during the past decade thanks to their fast treatment time and effective results. Although they may sound painful, chemical peels are safe, non-invasive, and usually made from glycolic or salicylic acid.

If you want to rejuvenate your skin or even out your skin’s appearance, then you should consider trying chemical peels. Not only do they target a myriad of skin issues, but there are different types of chemical peels depending on your skin: light or shallow peels, which target either the top layer of skin, or deeper peels, which can get help with issues such as large acne scars.

The Benefits of a Chemical Peel

If you’re wondering, “ do I need a chemical peel? ” it’s a good idea to examine your skin. Since chemical peels remove the damaged outer layer of skin, they work wonders for many different skin issues and have the following benefits:

  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles : If you have lines caused by the sun or aging, you can minimize their appearance with a chemical peel.
  • Acne : Chemical peels help acne patients and those who have overly-oily skin.
  • Reduces the appearance of large pores : If you want to minimize your pores’ size, a chemical peel will help.
  • Treats hyperpigmentation : If you have discoloration or dark spots on your face, chemical peels can strip these away.
  • Evens out your skin’s texture : If your skin tone or texture is uneven, then a chemical peel will remove the outer layer and give you a smoother and more even complexion.
  • Makes your skin look rejuvenated and younger : A chemical peel brings back a natural and youthful glow. This is because it causes a minor ‘injury’ to the skin during treatment, stimulating collagen production.

Who is a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

Anyone with skin issues such as wrinkles, acne, or acne scarring or skin issues incurred by sun damage are good candidates. If you have pigmentation issues or an uneven skin tone, a chemical peel will help.

For those of you who have overly oily skin, the treatment will remove these oils from your skin. Interestingly, chemical peels also work well for dry skin since they can remove dead skin which further hydrates and nourishes your skin.

If you’re wondering, what chemical peel is right for you, it depends entirely on your skin. For issues such as acne scars, you’ll need a deep chemical peel that penetrates your skin past the surface level. However, for issues such as fine lines or oily skin, a shallow peel will suffice.

Myth 2: MiraDry Is Not Permanent, Your Sweat Glands Will Grow Back

Unlike Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis, which needs regular top-up sessions, MiraDry does provide permanent results. However, to ensure that you get optimal results, it is best to have two sessions of MiraDry.

After just one MiraDry session, you’ll notice a big difference in terms of odor and underarm sweat. By having two separate MiraDry treatments, you’ll ensure that your armpits don’t ever sweat, even on the hottest summer days.

What Happens During the Treatment?

It’s essential to know how to prepare for a chemical peel treatment to get the best results. Firstly, you need to make sure that your skin is clean and that you’re not wearing any makeup. Before the treatment, your dermatologist will clean your skin further, removing its natural oils.

A protective ointment is then applied in sensitive areas like around the eyes and on the mouth. Then, the acidic chemical peel will be applied to the rest of your skin. You may feel some slight tingling or stinging, but this is normal and nothing to worry about.

Your dermatologist will leave the treatment on your skin for a set amount of time, before carefully removing it and giving you some advice on aftercare.

What to Expect After the Treatment?

After treatment, it’s normal to have red and sensitive skin as though you’ve been sunburnt. To ensure your skin heals properly, you need to keep it out of the sun for at least a week and apply a soothing ointment to it.

After a few days, the redness should disappear, but you may notice that your skin is dry and flaking off. This is an entirely normal part of the process. If you get a shallow peel, you’ll see results a few weeks after treatment, but it may take a little longer with a deeper peel.
