We have successfully performed hundreds of PicoSure procedures for our patients, and have given them back the beautiful, vibrant, and healthy skin they once had.
Melasma is very common disorder of hyperpigmentation disorder which develops over years and is identified as irregular brown spots primarily on the lower forehead, upper cheeks, nose, chin, or the upper lip. People who suffer from these unsightly patches typically experience issues with self confidence, self esteem, and embarrassment.
The exact cause of melasma is unknown although it is associated with chronic sun exposure, a and a positive family history. Females are more commonly affected as compared with males.
We have helped many patients over the years reduce or eliminate melasma with a remarkable cutting-edge procedure call PicoSure Laser.
PicoSure delivers ultra-short bursts of laser energy measured in picoseconds, or one trillionth of a second. The procedure destroys skin discoloration and simultaneously triggers the cells to produce collagen and elastin. The short energy bursts penetrate below the surface of the skin, leaving the surface skin free of damage or burns.
The entire PicoSure procedure in generally completed within 30 minutes and begins with the application of a local anesthetic in the form of a numbing cream. Laser energy is administered to the face in a light sweeping motion. Most patients report very little discomfort and liken the sensation to that of a rubber band being lightly snapped on the skin.
The results of the PicoSure Laser procedure vary based on condition being treated as well as the level of skin damage.
Skin discolouration issues such as melasma, age spots, and freckles, and will actually become darker after the first few treatments and will typically disappear after two or three PicoSure treatment sessions. Maximum pigmentation reduction or elimination may take several weeks.
After the PicoSure treatment, the patient will experience minor swelling and pink or redness for 1- 3 hours and can get back to their normal schedule immediately. In fact, many of our patients schedule their appointments prior to work in the morning, during the lunch hour, or immediately after work.
Make up can be applied to the face immediately after the procedure and a normal skincare regiment can begin that evening.

“For years I had patches of discolored skin in my face and hands which seemed to get worse in the summer. I finally looked for a dermatologist and luckily found Dr. Alanen at Derm.ca. He explained to me that I had a condition called Melasma and recommended a few treatment options. I chose the laser method and now a few months later the spot are hardly visible. Thank you Dr. Alanen.”
