Hair loss treatment
Medical-Grade Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss in Calgary
Also called photobiomodulation therapy. Personalized hair and scalp care.
When your part looks wider, your ponytail feels thinner or your scalp is more visible, understanding your options matters.
At Derm.ca, we offer in-clinic Dermalux Tri-Wave MD LED phototherapy as a non-invasive option within a personalized hair loss plan. Before recommending treatment, our team reviews your diagnosis, pattern of thinning and scalp health to decide whether light therapy has a role in your care.
How it works
How does LED light therapy work for hair?
Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of light to influence biological activity in tissue. In hair loss research, scientists have studied how light affects the cells of the hair follicle and the processes involved in hair growth.
Proposed mechanisms include:
- Cellular energy. Light may stimulate the mitochondria, increasing ATP production that fuels follicle activity.
- Blood flow. It may support circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the scalp.
- Growth phase. It may help follicles stay in the anagen (growth) phase longer.
These effects depend on the wavelength, the dose delivered, the treatment schedule and the condition being treated. More light, or a brighter-looking device, doesn't necessarily mean better results.
Clinical studies of certain red light devices have found improvements in hair growth and thickness in some people with androgenetic alopecia, commonly called male or female pattern hair loss. Results vary, and evidence for one device doesn't automatically apply to another. Source: American Academy of Dermatology
Is it right for me?
Which types of hair loss may benefit?
The strongest clinical interest in light-based hair treatment is for pattern hair loss: gradual thinning at the crown, a widening part or a receding hairline.
Similar-looking changes can have different causes. Sudden shedding after illness or weight loss, patchy alopecia areata and inflammatory scalp conditions each need their own assessment and treatment. Before recommending LED therapy, we look at questions like:
- Is your hair gradually thinning, actively shedding or breaking?
- How long has the change been happening?
- Are there signs of scalp inflammation?
- Are medical, hormonal, nutritional or medication-related factors involved?
- What treatments have you already tried?
Your answers help us confirm the diagnosis, decide whether LED therapy is worth considering, and plan any other care you may need.
The technology
Dermalux Tri-Wave MD at Derm.ca
The Dermalux Tri-Wave MD is a professional, medical-grade phototherapy system made in Britain. It delivers three wavelengths: blue (415 nm), red (633 nm) and near-infrared (830 nm), with configurable treatment settings.
Each wavelength has a different purpose, and not all three are used for hair. For scalp treatment, your practitioner selects the settings for the proposed use and your clinical situation. Positioning, hair coverage and the area being treated all matter when planning treatment.
A professional device lets us deliver a defined protocol, with control over wavelength, intensity and dose, rather than relying on how bright a device looks.
Realistic expectations
What improvements might you notice?
For suitable candidates, the goal is to support hair growth and improve the appearance of thickness and scalp coverage over time.
Progress is judged against a starting point. Standardized photos, taken with the same lighting, parting, positioning and camera distance, help your team assess change more reliably than day-to-day impressions.
Results differ from person to person. Light therapy doesn't create new hair follicles, guarantee regrowth or restore a full head of hair. Your expectations should reflect your diagnosis and the evidence for the device and protocol being used.
Your treatment plan
Why consistency matters
Hair grows in cycles, so meaningful change takes time to assess. LED therapy for hair is done as a series of sessions, not a single appointment. Before you begin, your team will explain:
- How often treatment is recommended
- When your progress will be reviewed
- Whether maintenance sessions may be appropriate afterward
- How an in-clinic device differs from at-home red light caps
We don't promise a fixed regrowth timeline, because your response depends on more than the number of sessions completed.
Combined care
Can LED therapy be combined with other hair loss treatments?
Yes. LED therapy may be considered alongside other treatments when each has a clear role in your plan. Depending on your diagnosis, this could include topical or oral prescription treatment, PRP or treatment for an underlying scalp condition.
Your clinician will explain why each option is recommended, how appointments are coordinated and how progress will be monitored. If PRP is part of your plan, we'll discuss how to schedule LED sessions around it.
Many patients also use the Revoderm hair routine (shampoo, conditioner and serum) as part of their daily care between visits.
Your appointment
What happens during an LED scalp treatment?
Each visit starts with a quick check that treatment is still appropriate for you. Let your practitioner know about new medications, health changes, scalp irritation or recent procedures.
Your scalp is prepared according to the protocol, the light head is positioned over the treatment area, and you're given eye protection. You can relax during the session while your practitioner runs the prescribed settings.
LED treatment involves no injections and no intentional skin injury. Your team will explain what you may feel, how long the appointment takes and whether any preparation or aftercare is needed. Tell your practitioner right away if anything feels uncomfortable.
FAQ
Red light therapy for hair: your questions
Why choose medical-grade LED treatment at Derm.ca?
Precision matters in light therapy. The Dermalux Tri-Wave MD is a professional medical device that controls wavelength, intensity, energy delivery and dose, so practitioners can deliver a defined protocol.
At Derm.ca, this is combined with a professional scalp assessment, careful positioning and progress monitoring. We consider the cause of your thinning and explain how LED therapy may fit alongside prescription treatment, PRP and home care.
Is red light therapy the same as LED therapy?
They overlap. LED describes the light source, red light describes part of the spectrum it emits, and photobiomodulation describes using selected light settings to influence biological activity. Devices marketed as red light therapy can differ a lot.
Is a clinic treatment the same as an at-home cap or mask?
No. The technology, delivery and care are different. Derm.ca uses a professional phototherapy system with precise wavelengths, adjustable power and configurable protocols, combined with clinical assessment and monitoring.
Home caps vary in design, output and evidence, and some are FDA-cleared. A professional device's higher output doesn't by itself prove better regrowth; suitability and results depend on the device, protocol and diagnosis.
Is LED therapy suitable for women and men?
Yes, both may be assessed. Women and men can both experience pattern hair loss. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, clinical findings and proposed protocol.
Can it treat every type of alopecia?
No. Alopecia means hair loss and covers several different conditions. Evidence for pattern hair loss shouldn't be applied to every cause of shedding, patchy loss or scarring alopecia.
Can I continue my prescription hair loss treatment?
Don't stop prescribed treatment without advice. Tell our team what you're using so we can explain how it fits with the proposed LED plan.
Is LED therapy safe for everyone?
No treatment is right for everyone. Light sensitivity, certain medications and some health conditions can affect suitability. We review your medical history and the device's precautions before treatment.
Do the device's regulatory approvals mean it's cleared for hair regrowth?
Not necessarily. Regulatory approvals apply to specific devices and specific uses. They shouldn't be read as confirmation that every use, including hair regrowth, has the same authorization in Canada, Europe and the United States.
Do I need a referral?
Not for LED therapy. You can book a private hair loss consultation directly. A referral from your family doctor is only needed for a medical dermatology assessment covered by Alberta Health. Either way, understanding the cause of your hair loss is the starting point.
