TOENAIL FUNGUS LASER

Toenail fungus “onychomycosis” is a very common condition, affecting one in ten Canadians.

The appearance of toenail fungus is not only unsightly but can lead to embarrassment and a lack of self confidence. It is estimated that upwards of 10% of the North American population suffer from toenail fungus, with the number dramatically increasing as people age.

Toenail fungus does not generally pose any serious risks in people who are in good health, however, it rarely goes away on its own, and must be medically treated.

What Is Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus is a medical condition called onychomycosis and is a very common infection found in the toenail. It is typically identified by a white, brown, or yellow discoloration of the toenail. There is generally no pain associated with toenail fungus, however, debris is often found under the toenail and may cause the nail to thicken, crumble, and spread to several other toenails.

Toenail fungus is most often caused by dermatophytes, fungal organisms which surface as infections of the hair, skin, and nails. Because dermatophytes are spread through direct contact, toenail fungus is deemed contagious.

Further, toenail fungus can also be caused by untreated athlete’s foot, exposure to yeast and molds, and is very common in people with poor circulation in the feet and compromised immune systems.

Laser Treatment For Toenail Fungus

At Derm.ca, we have had tremendous success helping patients eliminate or greatly reduce the unsightly appearance of toenail fungus using advanced laser treatments. Laser Fungal Toenail treatments are an effective and FDA-approved remedy for restoring the texture, color, and appearance of the nail.

For those who have tried alternative methods for antifungal and toenail restoration, and have not had success, or experienced a reaction to topical or oral medications, Laser Fungal Toenail treatments could be the solution you have been searching for.

Conditions Treated By Laser Fungal Toenail Therapy

  • Toenail Fungus / Onychomycosis
  • Discoloration of the toenail
  • Thickening of The toenail
  • Changes in toenail shape

How Does The Laser Fungal Toenail Therapy Procedure Work?

A laser device emits short pulses of laser energy through the toenail which works to destroy mold and fungus living within and under the toenail without affecting the actual nail or tissue. The procedure is relatively painless, with most patients reporting warmth in the area being treated and a sensation similar to a very light pin prick.

Sessions are generally completed within 15 minutes, with patients resuming normal activities immediately after the session. 2-3 treatments are typically required, however, severe cases may require more.

When Will I See Results?

It is difficult to determine how long the results of a Laser Fungal Toenail treatment will last since many factors beyond the scope of the treatment can have an effect. Lifestyle, occupation, recreational activities, hobbies, and foot hygiene are all contributing factors. Some of our tips to prevent toenail fungus from returning include:

  • Dry feet thoroughly after swimming, bathing, or showering
  • Never let feet touch floors in public locker rooms
  • Wear moisture absorbing socks
  • Avoid shoe which do not breath
  • Spray shoes and feet with anti-bacterial sprays
  • Always use sanitized pedicure instruments
  • Don’t use nail polish to over infected toenail

How Long Will Results Last?

The toenail will remain discolored for a number of weeks after the procedure, however, within 8 -10 weeks, the fungus will dissipate and a new, healthy toenail will begin to grow at the base of the toe.

In order to see maximum results, the toenail must go through its entire growth cycle, and it is not uncommon to take as long as 8 months for the new toenail to be fully formed.
