EARLOBE REPAIR

Earlobe repair is a simple procedure performed in or clinic which has proven to dramatically improve self-image and self-confidence of thousands of patients.

Split, torn, or altered earlobes are common problems in both men and women, and often lead to feelings of self-consciousness. Those who suffer from torn or split earlobes often try to hide their ears or cover them with their hair.

Using a cosmetically elegant surgical earlobe repair procedure, Dr. Alanen has delivered remarkable results to thousands of patients, allowing them to regain their self-confidence and a better self-image.

This simple yet delicate procedure is performed under local anesthetic, completed very quickly, and requires little or no downtime.

What Causes Earlobe Damage?

The earlobe consists primarily of skin and fatty tissue, and due to its soft, pliable nature, can damage very easily. Types of earlobe damage typically take the form of a split earlobe, a widened piercing hole, or a stretched ear piercing. The cause of earlobe damage varies widely, however, they typically fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Acute trauma
Acute trauma is generally accidental and can range from a bump to the head, a dog or small child tearing at an earring, or simply catching an earring on a sweater or hat.
  2. Clip-on Earrings
Clip-on Earrings can cause severe damage to the earlobe as extended use can constrict blood flow to the earlobe, leading to a split earlobe or even necrosis which is a premature death of the cells.
  3. Thin Earlobes
Some individuals are born with thin earlobes which make them more prone to earlobe damage. Those with thin earlobes should be conscious of the ear jewelry they choose.
  4. Gauges
Gauges are disc-like earrings which are inserted in the earlobe often for the purpose of creating large permanent holes in the earlobes.
  5. Heavy Earrings
Frequently wearing heavy or large earrings will lengthen the pierced hole causing stud-type earrings to fall out and making it difficult to wear other earrings.

Earlobe Revision Surgery

Dr. Alanen performs all earlobe revision surgeries in one of the non-hospital surgical suites located within the Derm.ca clinic.

At the outset, a local anesthetic is administered to alleviate any pain, and depending on the size, scope, and nature of the earlobe damage, will use one of a few surgical options. These include simple excision, punch biopsy incision, partial or complete cleft repair technique, or a combination if necessary.

In most cases, the procedure involves trimming frayed edges of the tear, re-stitching the skin, and securing with sutures. In more complex cases, a reconstructive procedure called the flap technique may be employed.

Surgery is typically completed within 30 minutes, with most patients experiencing only minor discomfort during the session.

Recovery and Results

There is little to no downtime associated earlobe revision surgery, however, sutures are left in place for 5 – 7 days or until the swelling subsides. A follow up appointment will be scheduled where the suture will be removed. As with any surgery, patients should refrain from any strenuous activity for 1 -2 weeks.

We recommend that the area be kept clean, dry, and covered for a few days to aid in the healing process. Additionally, Dr. Alanen may prescribe a topical antibiotic ointment to be applied frequently in order to combat any potential infection.

The healing process will take approximately 2 – 3 weeks at which time the scarring will be minimal. Piercing can again be performed; however, it is recommended that Dr. Alanen be consulted prior to doing so.

Who Is A Good Candidate for Earlobe Revision Surgery?

Anyone who has experienced ripped, torn, or altered earlobes is a candidate for earlobe revision surgery. Whether the damage was recent or occurred in the past, Dr. Alanen has a solution to restore the earlobe back to its original form.

Many of our patients have developed elongated piercing holes making it difficult to wear earrings. They simply want their earlobes repaired in order to have their ears pierced again. In other cases, patients undergo earlobe rejuvenation where they want their earlobes reshaped or resized in order to better match the features on their face.
