Moles and skin tags can be esthetically displeasing having a negative effect on self-confidence and self-image.

They take the form of different sizes and shapes and are typically light or dark brown in colour. Most are benign, however, some can be pre-cancerous and lead to a form of skin cancer called melanoma.

We highly recommend that you schedule a consultation to have any suspect moles assessed by Dr. Alanen, as a preventative measure against skin cancer.

When Should I Have Moles & Skin Tags Assessed?

At Derm.ca, we believe that your skin can never be checked by a Dermatologist too often. If you have spent a lot of time in the sun and have lighter skin, you are more susceptible to potential skin issues.

Additionally, if you see a mole which has one or more of the following characteristics, you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Alanen immediately:

  • The shape has become asymmetric
  • The border has become ragged or irregular
  • The colour is not consistent
  • Diameter is larger than the tip of your finger
  • Mole has become elevated or raised

We highly recommend being aware and self-checking your moles on a regular basis. Additionally, we provide two services, Complete Skin Review, and Mole Mapping, which identify any potential skin issues or pre-cancerous skin cells before they develop into a serious condition such as melanoma.

What Is A Mole?

Moles are skin imperfections of the skin which typically brown or black in colour. They begin developing in childhood years and can appear anywhere on the skin, either alone or in clusters. Over time, moles generally change in appearance becoming raised, lighter in colour, and occasion growing hair.

In most cases, moles are harmless and pose no medical concern. There are however certain signs to look for which may indicate that they are precancerous which can lead to melanoma. Learn more here about self checking moles here.

In any event, annual skin checks are advisable as a preventative measure to avoid skin cancer issues.

What Is A Skin Tag?

Skin tags, although unsightly, are harmless, benign flaps of skin tissue that protrude from the surface of the skin. They often become a nuisance if they are located in a spot where they can be rubbed by a bra strap, collar, or another piece of clothing.

Skin tags are more prevalent in women and are typically found in the neck, chest, back, armpits, under the breasts, or in the groin area.

At Derm.ca, we are able to remove skin tags using one of our simple yet effective treatments.

Here’s What Our Patients Are Saying…

“I had a number of suspicious looking moles and other brown marks on my back, chest, and shoulders which were very concerning. I saw Dr. Alanen and cannot express how knowledgeable and thorough he was in going through the Mole Mapping process. He explained everything and answered all of my questions. Luckily there was nothing to be concerned about but I now have a baseline to work from. I highly recommend Derm.ca and Dr. Alanen
