Small hollows, creases, and depressions in the facial skin can be treated using dermal fillers. This is good news for those wary of facial skin ablation or repositioning. Surgical procedures can produce long-lasting results, but those results are harder to predict. Several different types of dermal fillers are available, and when we consult with the client, we choose one or another based on the condition of the skin, the size of the sunken area, and the severity of any wrinkles or folds.
Candidates For Filler Injections
Most often, middle-aged adults experience wrinkling of the facial skin before any severe creases or depressions become apparent. The skin is supported from below by the subcutaneous layers, but these become less structured as we age. Also, the decrease in collagen production results in skin that is less taut and supple.
Those who are experiencing shadowed hollows or creases near the sides of the nose, on the lower cheeks, and around the eyes are probable candidates for filler injections. Some types of dermal fillers can also be used to smooth out the skin on the upper neck, add volume to the lips, and erase fine wrinkles appearing on any area of the face.
Types Of Dermal Fillers
Acid-based fillers are the most commonly used for adding volume to the facial surface. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar substance that attracts and holds moisture in place. Our bodies produce less and less of it as we age, but a concentrated amount of this acid in a gel compound can literally raise the skin upward because the layers will bind with and hold water molecules.
Calcium-based dermal fillers can produce long-lasting results. The calcium hydroxylapatite particles act as a structural element, sort of like scaffolding. Subcutaneous tissues build onto the scaffolding and this firms up the base upon which the skin rests.
Simple, 30-Minute Procedure
We use a thin needle to inject the gel just beneath the skin. Most procedures can be completed in less than 30 minutes. If an acid-based gel is used, results become noticeable in less than a day. Calcium-based gels produce results more slowly, but they can be used to treat a much larger area of skin.
There’s no downtime after treatment, making this type of skin-smoothing procedure favorable versus other, more aggressive treatments.
