What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a novel therapeutic modality that utilizes the growth factors that are abundant within platelets to regenerate diseased and scarred tissues.
How does it work?
A small vial of blood is taken from a vein, usually the back of the hand or elbow area, and is centrifuged to separate the blood cells from the plasma and platelets. The red blood cells are safely discarded. Then, the growth factors are released from the platelets and are immediately injected into the diseased tissue. The appeal of the process is that one’s own growth factors are used to regenerate tissue.
What growth factors are found within platelets?
Platelets are a rich source of growth factors. This of course makes sense when one considers that they are “early on the scene” when tissue is injured (e.g. a cut of the skin or an abrasion); the growth factors are released to heal injured tissue. There are numerous growth factors in platelets including platelet-derived growth factor, insulin-like growth factor and transforming growth factor and epidermal growth factor.
What conditions can be treated with PRP?
PRP has been used for years in regenerative medicine and orthopedics but only recently has its place in dermatology been explored. PRP has an important role in anti-aging, hair loss and scars (including acne scars) and melasma.
Why PRP at Derm.ca?
One of the most important aspects of PRP is preparation of the platelet solution in the laboratory. In addition to being a Dermatologist, Dr Alanen is a certified Dermatopathologist / Laboratory Medicine specialist. His clinic, Derm.ca, is a certified Non-Hospital Surgical Facility (NHSF) with an in-house tissue laboratory and formally trained laboratory technician. This background helps assure an optimally prepared platelet solution for patients.

Fine Lines and Skin Quality
The natural aging of your skin is due to an imbalance between the rate of destruction and renewal of cells and collagen. By promoting the process of natural tissue regeneration, mesotherapy injections of A-PRP improve skin quality and smoothes fine lines of the face, decollete and hands.
